A replacement cable had the wrong kobo-end, but it fit into connector slot! I bought a 3rd party USB cable making sure it precisely matched USB specifications on both ends side-loading nirvana ensued. Out of the box at least I could charge, but it was just blind to the computer. I wonder if the Kobo provided computer connection cable is a poster child what "Made in China" means in all the worst ways. It appears the UI is kept consistent across its eReader line. I sense Kobo is very mindful of UI changes complementing and preserving its fine reading experience. I am pleasantly surprised at the number of software updates, adding thoughtful features and more importantly fixing the bugs. Freezes were never (almost never?) while simply reading and page turning. For the first year I had sometimes glitchy library checkout, rare but annoying freezes, and spotty computer connectivity. I initially bought it due to my girlfriend’s Libra H2O working perfectly, but as things stand the difference is night and day.įWIW I've had a Kobo Forma since April 2019. I am currently desperately hoping for a good firmware update which would make the device predictable in usage. Supposedly you have to go for a kobo if you sideload books, but a glance at the forums and kobo subreddit will show you people constantly have to factory reset their devices because there’s always something going wrong.īear in mind I really want to make the kobo work and have gone through 10 devices at the shop for the ghosting and 3 devices for all the other issues. I think there is no reason for buying the Forma over the Sage unless you get. If you want a bigger screen I would rather go for the Sage, a couple bucks more than the Forma and stylus compatibility. Occasionally the device freezes and you need to reset it. The Forma was 100 more expensier than the Libra 2 and didnt even have Bluetooth. At the July software update a ton of people including me got their readers stuck in boot loops as well, struggling to update, god knows why. It simply refuses to actually connect to the pc and goes into a boot loop. The reader doesn’t play good with usb cables and that includes the cable from the box. Image Credits: Kobo I’m not a fan of the changes, as you can tell, but it’s not like it ruins the whole thing. The supposedly same screen (carta 1200) has a slight unfixable ghosting issue, regardless of page refresh frequency. The smaller Libra 2 fares better, with clickier but not too clicky buttons. For four months with the Kobo I’ve not had a day with something not going wrong. For five years with the Paperwhite I just sideloaded books and read them. I myself made the switch from an old paperwhite to a kobo libra 2. (Books can’t be protected by DRM for this method to work, however.Currently, due to a string of bad firmware updates from May onwards, the Libra 2 are extremely bug ridden and there’s always something that’s not working as planned. Windows will recognize your Libra 2 as a USB drive, into which you can copy books and other compatible formats like PDFs and even Microsoft Word files onto. In addition to downloading borrowed books from OverDrive and purchased titles from the Kobo store, you can of course plug the device into a PC to transfer files. Instead, your two options are the cover of the book you’re currently reading, or a blank screen and a bit of text that says “Sleeping.” You have to do a little work on your own to add your own custom screensavers. If I’m not careful, I can lose whole hours while reading.Ĭuriously, Kobo doesn’t offer screensavers for Libra 2 while it’s in standby mode, like Kindles do. The only missing option? A native ability to make the time always visible, as on Kindles. Kobo makes book-related settings visible as soon as you tap the center of the screen-a second tap usually gets you to where you want. Within books, navigating is straightforward and intuitive. For example, Amazon wasn’t the first to introduce waterproofing and warm lighting with its Kindles. Kobo is a longtime veteran of the e-reader wars-for over a decade, the company has steadily produced affordable models that have pushed the envelope on features. There are a few things that knock off 1 star from a perfect. Supported formats: EPUB, EPUB3, FlePub, PDF, MOBI, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, CBR, Kobo Audiobooks ORIGINAL REVIEW: Overall, I think the Libra 2 is a fantastic ebook e-reader, and I recommend it.Front light: Yes (plus adjustable brightness and color temperature).Display: 7-inch, 300 ppi E Ink touchscreen.Kobo Libra 2 (2021): Specs, features, price In fact, after months of using the Libra 2, it’s often my first suggestion to folks seeking an e-reader with physical buttons-even people already deeply invested in the Kindle ecosystem.
